The BluesBlock Story

Hi, I'm Mike, the creator of the BluesBlock© learning method. I am a professional educator with 30 years experience. My interest in education has always been finding different ways to help students understand new concepts by breaking down traditional methods in order to find new paths to success. While I have done this for many years in the field of technology, engineering and design I have now turned this approach to my lifelong passion and developed a totally unique method for teaching students how to construct and play slow, soulful and sophisticated blues solos.

For many years I was a student of the Blues and trod the familiar path of learning pentatonic scale diagrams, copying licks from my favorite players, trying to learn from disjointed lessons on the internet and enrolling in countless online courses. Despite all of this, I still found my ability to solo with skill and soul lacking. I then decided to do a deep dive into music theory hoping to find that "missing piece" to my learning. I studied different scales and modes but felt these took me away from the feel that I was trying to achieve. The journey through music theory, for me, was fascinating and helpful. But I was still not there. I felt that, while I had found some major pieces to the puzzle, I still needed the final piece; I was close. This is where the universe decided to conduct an intervention.....

I was on the search for a new guitar and was inspired by the guitars of my blues guitar heroes. I spent time pouring over images of these guitars when I was suddenly struck by a common element on all of them. Neck wear patterns!

fret wear patterns on guitar neck
There was a definite pattern to all of the wear on the fretboards and, given my love of finding patterns in everything, it got me searching. What really grabbed my curiosity was the fact that there were no obvious pentatonic patterns and the wear was not even. And so I started to explore deeper......
This is the journey that led to the development of the “BluesBlock” method. Once I found and developed this method I was amazed at how quickly and naturally my blues guitar soloing took huge strides in progress. Not only could I start playing solos that had that "professional" sound that locked into the backing tracks, I could start playing all over the neck to get the best tones out of my guitar. The other great advantage was being able to go watch and listen to my guitar heroes and now be able to visualize what they were playing and how it all related. And.... the most frustrating thing of all was how easy this was to achieve if you just looked at the fretboard in a different way.

How does this course work?

The BluesBlock method will take you directly to the key notes and sweet notes across the entire fretboard in just two patterns. The first pattern is repeatable all over the neck and easy to learn while the second pattern is what I call the "connector pattern" and links everything together. You will then extend the basic block adding blues notes and even scale modes for different "flavors" of soloing. Most importantly you will start playing and learning immediately. Be assured that rather than just sharing this unique method with you I teach it through a comprehensive course structure that will immerse you in blues theory, techniques and ideas allowing you to improvise to your heart's content.

You will be guided through an understanding of the underlying chord structures in slow blues which ultimately creates the "map" that your solos can follow. Crucially, you will discover the range of minor blues progressions, their chords, substitutions and timing structure. In nearly every book, internet lesson and online course I have ever used I notice that there is so little attention paid to this fundamental concept which then creates endless frustration for the learner. If you can't read the "map" how can you create your journey?

The BluesBlock method that I have created also differs in approach to many existing lessons or courses in as much as you, the student, create your own solos from the ground up taking inspiration from your favorite guitarists. There are no set solos for you to copy or bags of licks to learn, drill and then forget. You are the creator of the musical journey on which you want to take your audience and you will have the knowledge and skills to make it as interesting and as varied as you like; taking back roads, main roads and even going off road with the confidence of always knowing where you are and where you are heading.

Throughout the course you will be learning with your guitar in-hand as I believe we all learn best by doing. I have created carefully crafted backing tracks that will help you build your solos by using visual and audible cues all broken down into small sections. And, when it comes to theory you will be supported by easily digestible content that is "brain friendly" and accessible to all ages of guitarist. The success of my theory lessons with students is the fact that I take a lot of effort to break them down into small chunks and I only teach the necessary theory. One mistake I see guitarists make in their search for better playing is to take complete music theory courses. In reality, you only need the tip of the iceberg, not the whole thing. Also, the theory that I walk you through will unlock countless doors for you and stay with you for the rest of your guitar career.

There is also so much more to this comprehensive course that compiles over 20 years of learning and teaching slow blues improvisation.
